Which German State Is Best for an Indian Worker? Pay, Rent and Jobs Compared

8 October 2026  ·  Taha Airwaves

Candidates almost always ask about pay and almost never about rent, then arrive in Munich and discover the two are connected. Here is the comparison that actually matters: what is left at the end of the month, and how easily you can find the next job if the first does not work out.

The Short Version

  • Highest gross pay: Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg
  • Highest savings for a trade worker: usually North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony or Saxony — mid-pay with much lower rent
  • Easiest to find a second job: NRW and the southern states, on employer density
  • Cheapest living: Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia

South: Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg

Skilled metal trades earn roughly €3,100–4,100 gross per month, the highest in Germany, under IG Metall agreements. Hospitality and care also pay above the national average.

The offset is housing. Munich and Stuttgart rents are the steepest in the country; a private one-room flat can take €900–1,400. With employer-arranged shared accommodation at €400–600 the maths works well. Without it, a high salary disappears into rent.

Best for: metal trades, automotive, machine building, hospitality — especially where the employer provides housing.

West: North Rhine-Westphalia

Pay sits slightly below the south — trades roughly €2,900–3,600 — but rent outside Düsseldorf and Cologne city centres is far lower, and the sheer density of employers means a worker who needs to change jobs has options within commuting distance. Logistics and construction dominate.

Best for: warehouse and logistics, construction, anyone who values a thick job market.

North: Hamburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein

Mid-table pay with affordable housing outside Hamburg city. Port logistics, shipyards, wind energy and food processing dominate. Shift premiums in these sectors lift take-home pay meaningfully.

Best for: logistics, welding and fabrication, food production.

East: Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Brandenburg

The lowest gross pay — production operators roughly €2,500–3,100 — but by far the cheapest housing, often €300–450 for shared accommodation. Net savings can match or beat the south. New semiconductor and automotive investment is adding roles steadily.

One caution for employers rather than workers: in this region the FEG salary floor can sit above local norms, so contracts need checking. See our eastern Germany page.

Best for: production and logistics roles where saving is the priority.

Berlin

A category of its own: mid-level pay, high rent, the largest South Asian community in Germany, and the widest range of work. Many workers accept lower net savings for the social and cultural reality of a big international city.

The Comparison That Matters

On €3,000 gross (roughly €2,000 net), shared housing in Saxony at €350 leaves around €1,100 after living costs. The same job in Munich at €3,400 gross (roughly €2,230 net) with housing at €550 leaves around €1,150. Almost identical — with very different daily lives.
