C+E Licence and Code 95: The Real Path for Indian Drivers Going to Poland

6 October 2026  ·  Taha Airwaves

Driving is the European corridor where expectations and reality diverge most for Indian candidates. The jobs exist, the pay is good, and the qualification path is longer than anyone wants it to be. Here is the sequence as it actually runs in Poland.

Your Indian Licence Will Not Transfer

India is not party to an exchange arrangement that would allow a direct swap for a Polish category C+E licence. Your Indian licence may permit limited private driving for a short initial period after you establish residence, but professional driving requires a Polish licence obtained through the Polish testing system.

Experienced drivers do not repeat full training. They take focused lessons on Polish road rules, documentation and manoeuvres, then sit the theory and practical examinations.

Code 95: The Professional Qualification

Separate from the licence, EU law requires professional drivers to hold the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, shown as "Code 95" on the licence. New entrants complete an accelerated initial qualification (kwalifikacja wstępna przyspieszona) followed by an examination. Thereafter, periodic training is required every five years.

Both the licence and Code 95 are needed. Having one without the other does not allow you to drive commercially.

The Driver Card and Tachograph Rules

Once licensed you apply for a digital driver card. Every vehicle above 3.5 tonnes uses a digital tachograph, and the EU driving-hours rules apply from your first shift:

  • Maximum nine hours' daily driving, extendable to ten twice a week
  • A 45-minute break after four and a half hours
  • A minimum eleven-hour daily rest
  • Weekly and fortnightly limits on total driving

Violations are fined against both driver and operator, and Polish and EU enforcement is active. This is one area where Gulf driving habits genuinely must change.

Costs and Who Pays

Licence conversion with lessons and examinations plus the Code 95 qualification typically totals PLN 6,000–12,000 per driver. In a properly structured engagement the employer funds this against a service commitment written into the contract — not as a debt the driver carries personally.

The Realistic Timeline

  • Months 0–1: selection, licence and record verification, medical screening
  • Months 1–3: type-A permit filed, D visa issued, travel
  • Months 3–4: arrival; driver works as a yard or depot operative, earning from week one
  • Months 4–7: lessons, C+E theory and practical, Code 95 course and exam
  • Months 6–9: driver card, route induction, first solo route

Six to nine months from recruitment to solo driving is realistic. Anyone promising faster is either not explaining the qualification requirement or not intending to fund it.

The Four Things Your Contract Must Say

1. Who pays for licence conversion and Code 95 2. What you are paid during the qualification period 3. The expected date of your first solo route 4. The accommodation arrangement

We do not place drivers without all four in writing, because this is the role where verbal promises cause the most disputes.

Why It Is Still Worth It

International C+E drivers in Poland commonly reach PLN 7,000–11,000 net per month including subsistence allowances, with EU residence rights and a route to permanent residence behind it. The qualification period is an investment with a defined end date — provided the contract says so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive in Poland on my Indian licence?

Not professionally. You must obtain a Polish category C+E licence through the Polish testing system plus the Code 95 professional qualification. Experienced drivers take focused lessons rather than full training.

How long until I can drive solo in Poland?

Six to nine months from recruitment, of which two to four months is licence conversion and Code 95 after arrival. You work in a depot or yard role, paid, during that period.
