Hiring Indian Students and Graduates Already in Germany: Working Students, Job Seekers and Switching Permits

24 October 2026  ·  Taha Airwaves

Indian students have become one of the largest groups of international students at German universities, according to figures published by DAAD and the federal statistics office. Many study engineering, computer science and management, and many want to stay after graduating. For German employers this is a pool of candidates already in Germany, often with some German, a German degree and no visa appointment to wait for.

Working Students During Their Studies

Students from outside the EU holding a residence permit for study may work up to 140 full days or 280 half days per year, plus student assistant jobs at their university. Many employers hire them as working students (Werkstudenten). For social-insurance purposes, working-student status generally depends on keeping weekly hours to around 20 during the semester, with more allowed in the holidays.

Working-student roles are a low-risk way to assess potential hires. A student who has worked for you for a year knows your systems, your team and your expectations by graduation.

Internships

Mandatory internships required by the study programme generally do not count against the working-day allowance. Voluntary internships usually do, and may be subject to minimum-wage rules depending on duration. Check the status of each internship before agreeing terms.

After Graduation: the Job-Search Permit

Graduates of German universities can receive a residence permit for up to 18 months to look for a job matching their qualification. During this period they may take up any employment, which lets them earn while searching and lets employers hire them without delay.

Switching to a Work Permit

When a graduate finds a qualified job, they switch to a skilled-worker permit or an EU Blue Card at the local Ausländerbehörde. Recent graduates benefit from the reduced Blue Card salary threshold, and a German degree removes the need for degree evaluation. See our Blue Card guide for thresholds.

Graduates of German universities can also qualify for permanent residence comparatively quickly once they have worked in a qualified job, which makes job offers from German employers attractive.

Where Students Fit

IT and engineering: the strongest match. Many Indian students take master's programmes in computer science, data science, mechanical, electrical or automotive engineering. See our IT specialists page.

Business and logistics: supply-chain, controlling and international business graduates suit Mittelstand firms expanding internationally.

Healthcare and life sciences: biotech, pharma and public-health graduates.

Vocational trades: less common. Students rarely move into blue-collar trades, so for welders, care assistants or drivers, a pipeline from India remains the better source.

Finding Candidates

Universities run career services, job fairs and online job boards where employers can advertise. Indian student associations at many universities circulate vacancies. Working-student and thesis positions advertised in English attract more applications than German-only adverts.

Things to Check Before Hiring

  • The current residence permit and its conditions, including the remaining working days for students
  • Whether the planned job matches the qualification, which matters for the switch
  • The expected graduation date and permit expiry
  • German language skills if the role needs them

Combining Pools

Graduates in Germany suit roles needing degrees and some German. Card holders are covered in our Opportunity Card hiring guide. For skilled trades and larger numbers, recruitment directly from India remains the planned route.

Integration Advantage

Graduates have already handled registration, health insurance, bank accounts and residence permits. They usually have friends and networks in Germany. Their main need from an employer is a clear career path and, where relevant, support for a partner or family joining later.

Retention

Graduates hired on their first job compare offers carefully and change employers more readily than trade workers recruited from India. A visible development plan, mentoring and recognition of their German degree in pay grading keep them.

How We Help

We focus on recruitment from India, but we can advise on combining graduate hiring in Germany with planned recruitment from India. See the Germany hiring page.
