India, Philippines, Bangladesh or Nepal? Choosing a Source Country Trade by Trade for Saudi Projects

24 October 2026  ·  Taha Airwaves

Saudi employers recruit from many countries, and the general case for India is covered in our source-country comparison. Employers planning a specific crew ask a narrower question: for this trade, which source works best? This guide looks at four common sources — India, the Philippines, Bangladesh and Nepal — role by role. It is a practical view from recruitment, not a ranking of nationalities, and individual workers vary far more than national averages.

How Each Source Works

  • India — a very large and varied pool across skilled trades, technicians, supervisors and professionals; regulated through eMigrate, MEA-licensed agencies and Embassy-attested contracts; a wide network of SVP test centres
  • Philippines — strong English and service culture and a long tradition of overseas work in healthcare, hospitality and technical roles; recruitment runs through the Philippine government's migrant worker system, with its own contract and employer accreditation requirements
  • Bangladesh — a large source of general and semi-skilled labour for the Kingdom, with a growing skilled segment and government-regulated recruitment
  • Nepal — a source of general labour, construction and hospitality workers for the Gulf, with government approval required for each demand

Each country has its own wage expectations, attestation steps and lead times, so the administrative cost of a mixed-source crew is higher than that of a single-source one.

Skilled Construction and MEP Trades

For electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, welders, steel fixers and shuttering carpenters, India's ITI system produces one of the largest pools of certified candidates, and the SVP test-centre network makes certification easier to schedule. Filipino technicians are well regarded in MEP and often found in supervisory and QA/QC roles. Bangladeshi and Nepali candidates are widely used in general construction and increasingly in some trades, though the skilled pool is thinner. For SVP-listed trades, check where your candidates can sit the test before choosing a source.

Heavy Equipment and Driving

Licensed operators and drivers with Gulf experience are concentrated among South Asian candidates, with India and Pakistan both major sources; Pakistan is outside the scope of this guide. For Saudi licence conversion, prior Gulf experience matters more than nationality.

Industrial and Oil and Gas

India's refinery and petrochemical sector gives it depth in welders, fitters, riggers and E&I technicians familiar with plant procedures. The Philippines supplies strong instrument, QA/QC and inspection profiles. For turnaround crews needing hundreds of certified trades at short notice, India is usually the deepest single source.

Hospitality and Front of House

The Philippines has a strong reputation for front-of-house service and English-language guest relations. India supplies large numbers of trained housekeeping, kitchen and F&B staff, many from hotel-management institutes, and Indian chefs cover a wide range of cuisines. Many Saudi hotels run mixed teams for exactly this reason.

Healthcare

India and the Philippines are both long-established sources of nurses for Saudi hospitals, each subject to professional classification. The choice often depends on the hospital's existing workforce, language needs and the speed of credential verification.

General Labour, Cleaning and Agriculture

For general labour and cleaning, differences between sources are smaller, and wages, availability and the employer's Nitaqat and cost position tend to decide. Bangladesh and Nepal supply significant volumes at this level alongside India. In agriculture, workers from Indian farming districts and from Bangladesh are both common.

Supervisors and Foremen

Supervision is where the choice matters most. Gulf-experienced Indian foremen with Hindi, Urdu and English can manage crews drawn from several South Asian countries; Filipino supervisors are strong on English documentation. Whatever the mix, pick supervisors who share a language with the people they manage.

Blending Without Friction

  • Keep each work gang linguistically coherent
  • Use the same contract structure and accommodation standard for all nationalities, as auditors expect
  • Avoid pay differences for the same role that cannot be justified by skill or experience
  • Run one recruitment calendar so different lead times do not leave gaps

Where We Fit

We recruit from India only. For the trades where India is the deepest source — skilled construction and MEP, industrial trades, equipment operation, hospitality back-of-house and supervision — we can deliver at scale; for others, we will say honestly if another source is likely to suit you better. See our pages for MEP electricians, HVAC technicians and welders and fabricators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which source country is best for skilled trades in Saudi Arabia?

For SVP-listed construction, MEP and industrial trades, India offers one of the deepest certified pools and a wide test-centre network. Individual skill still matters more than nationality, so test every candidate.

Should we mix nationalities in one crew?

Many employers do. Keep each gang linguistically coherent, apply the same contract and accommodation standard to everyone, and choose supervisors who share a language with their crew.
